This is one of the more important question you can ask regarding tablecloths. If you are purchasing a tablecloth for your dining room table you generally do not want a tablecloth to go all the way to the floor. If you are seating guests at the table or using it as a buffet it may simply be too much fabric and get in the way. Dining room tables that are square or rectangular usually have legs on the outside corners of the table and a tablecloth to the floor will restrict your guests ability to stretch their legs under the table. If you are using folding tables for your bar or buffet then you should consider floor length tablecloths to hide the table legs and hardware of the table.
